Biodiversity conservation campaign to protect wild birds

Bird-collision prevention sticker installation and talk concert at Achasan Forest Library

As the first activity of its biodiversity conservation campaign ‘Save the Birds (鳥) KCC Glass,’ KCC Glass held a talk concert on September 10 at the Achasan Forest Library in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, to install bird-collision prevention stickers and raise awareness of wild bird protection. About 50 people took part, including KCC Glass executives and staff, officials from the National Institute of Ecology, the YouTuber Saeduckhoo, and his subscribers.

The ‘Save the Birds (鳥) KCC Glass’ campaign selects buildings located near forests, where bird collisions are expected to be frequent, attaches bird-collision prevention stickers to their exterior glass, and certifies them as ‘Save the Birds (鳥) KCC Glass Bird-Friendly Buildings.’ According to the ‘Research Report on Establishing Measures to Prevent Wild Bird Deaths Caused by Artificial Structures,’ submitted by the National Institute of Ecology to the Ministry of Environment in 2019, a survey found that some 8 million wild birds nationwide are harmed each year by colliding with artificial structures such as building glass or transparent soundproof walls. To prevent this, the ‘Wildlife Protection and Management Act’ was revised in 2022 to impose on public institutions a duty to minimize wildlife damage caused by artificial structures, and measures to reduce wild bird collisions with such structures are now under way. However, many sites have yet to be addressed, so harm to wild birds continues. In response, KCC Glass—as a leading Korean glass company—planned the ‘Save the Birds (鳥) KCC Glass’ campaign to fulfill its social responsibility and has begun full-fledged efforts to reduce wild bird collisions and raise public awareness of the issue.

On this first campaign day, the KCC Glass executives, staff, and other participants attached bird-collision prevention stickers to the exterior windows of the Achasan Forest Library and installed a certification plaque at the library entrance. With this, the Achasan Forest Library became the first bird-friendly building under ‘Save the Birds (鳥) KCC Glass.’
