LG Innotek announced that it has launched the 'Hygiene Lighting LED (Light-Emitting Diode),' a new concept of lighting source equipped with sterilizing and antibacterial functions.
The newly launched product utilizes the principle of sunlight disinfection, the same method used when airing out bedding in the sun to sterilize it. Bacteria have the characteristic of dying when exposed to sunlight for a long time. This is because a substance in bacteria called porphyrin reacts with a specific wavelength of visible light and destroys the bacterial cells.
Using its proprietary LED light-extraction technology, LG Innotek created the Hygiene Lighting LED by increasing the emission of the 405-nanometer (nm) wavelength, at which porphyrin reacts most actively. When the 'Hygiene Lighting LED' is applied to lighting, it sterilizes indoor spaces and maintains an antibacterial effect without any separate disinfection work, making hygiene management much simpler.
In a sterilization test conducted by the Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL), the 'Hygiene Lighting LED' sterilized 99.9% of E. coli. In addition, because the 'Hygiene Lighting LED' is harmless to the human body, it can be used with confidence in lighting for places where people come and go frequently, such as kitchens and bathrooms. This is because, unlike ultraviolet light, this lighting destroys only the cells of bacteria. It has been verified as harmless to human eyes and skin in the International Electrotechnical Commission's photobiological safety test (IEC62471).
Furthermore, the 'Hygiene Lighting LED' can easily optimize its sterilization intensity according to indoor conditions, much like adjusting the brightness of light. Depending on factors such as the level of contamination or the presence of people, the lighting mode can be set to strong sterilization, mild sterilization, or general lighting.
LG Innotek stated, "Now that the functionality and safety of the Hygiene Lighting LED have been proven, we plan to actively promote it to lighting companies at home and abroad. In particular, we expect its application to expand starting with places that require clean hygiene management, such as hospitals, food and pharmaceutical factories, and public facilities, and we will continue to publicize its distinctive advantages." In fact, last month LG Innotek carried out a pilot application of the 'Hygiene Lighting LED' in the viewing rooms and waste storage rooms of the Sinchon funeral hall at Yonsei University Severance Hospital. Along with strengthening hygiene management, it provides a sense of psychological reassurance, earning a favorable response from users.
